Hinterhofneurosen

We usually experience the cityscape from the street. What lies hidden behind the rows of houses is rarely considered in the broader perception. As a group of ‘backyard neurotics’, we were drawn to the inconspicuous entrances and passageways in Basel’s Klybeck neighbourhood. Crossing fluid boundaries, we used our bodies to expand public space, exploring informal nooks and crannies along the way. Together, we set out to find the backyards lost to the collective consciousness, exploring ways of temporarily reclaiming them.

‘Hinterhofneurosen (Backyard Neuroses) – À la recherche des arrière-cours perdues’ was an initiative by Julia Rüegger and Patrick Düblin/Office for Peripatetic Design, as part of the Walking Symposium Basel, organised by the ILEA on 12 September 2026.
